Playing Strong Piano Chord Progressions

May 18th, 2010

Chord progressions are the key to good music.  Some chord progressions are inherently stronger than others.  We have to learn which are best.  An exhaustive explanation of what makes up good chords is beyond the scope of this article but we will attempt to explain why having them is so vital.

Since this article is limited in scope the more advanced chord playing enthusiasts may want to review the article on: Piano Chord Progressions

But there are some general principles we can present here.  A review of music history gives significant insight into where the roots of strong chord progressions lie.  Most of these roots are found back in the common practice period that actually covers several hundred years of music including baroque, romantic and classic eras.

As a source for where to learn good chord progressions we review online courses on a regular basis in order to bring insight to this article.  We do not attempt to go, in this undertaking, to the performance level of understanding but other courses do.

Anyone just beginning to learn disciplined chord progressions might want to click over to this site:  Chord Basics

You must understand how to put a good chord progression together in order for it to sound good.  Traditionally there are the categories of chords which are tonic, dominant, and sub-dominant chords.

Once you understand that then you can quickly get to chord progressions because all progressions use a combination of those 3 categories.  As an example the tonic could move toward either a dominant or sub-dominant chord.  And a dominant chord traditionally moves toward the tonic and the  sub-dominant could see either dominant or tonic.

So in order to play a strong chord progression you would need to follow the basic rules above and construct a combination of the three types of chords into a piece of music.  There are more specific instructions about how to use all the rules in other courses linked within this article.

Following the basic rules for chord progressions enables you to construct strong chord progressions.  You can add voicing once you get the basic progressions captured and this will enable you to correctly place notes with the appropriate ranges.

Following adding the voicing then instrumentation or fingerings for keyboard is devised to make playing easier which, in turn, will enhance improvisation.

It takes practice to chord properly  Find a good course grounded in chording basics and advanced techniques and learn the rules of chording well.
