Piano Lessons And Adults

June 27th, 2010

When an adult returns to the ‘learning environment’ of classes they require different teaching styles.  This is true for most any type of formalized ‘schooling’.  If you would like to verify that a good way is to inform an adult who is contemplating a new learning experience that they need to return to a classroom setting and then watch how they react.

Adult lessons reviewed on sites such the following link are a great source for additional information.  Piano Lessons For Adults

Adults, who have been removed from the ‘school’ environment in some cases for decades simply don’t have the will or patience to sit through traditional lessons or classes.  Even considering a formalized school setting brings an unenthusiastic response from adults.  The thought of reentering a school type setting does not receive a favorable reception with most adults because they were certain that school was a thing of the past.

Adults do, however, respond positively to an activity based course.  They don’t want to have to go in and ‘dig’ the information out like the old days of school where they spent countless hours in the library researching some topic or other.  In the case of music they don’t want to return to the seemingly endless hours of practice as they basically wander the wilderness of music alone and bored.

They are interested in well planned courses that come in blocks that hold their attention without a major expenditure of their time.  The word ‘interest’ is the operative word here.

A parent of a child taking lessons can administer a practice schedule or at least ensure it is accomplished.  Obviously an adult won’t respond well to that type of ‘encouragement’!

Adult learners don’t have a parent to make sure that they practice.  This means that the adult course MUST stand on its own merits and command the attention of the adult learner.

This is the point where adult based courses differ from those used on children.  These courses are designed to meet the criteria mentioned above PLUS the successful ones add one more component.  They use learning techniques based on participative activity.  There is no secret for this other than the fact that people learn when they do it themselves.

Independent reviews on a site that is hosted by music educators is a great place to do your research into one of these courses.
