Finding Ways to Develop Kids Musical Talents

May 4th, 2010

How old does my child have to be before he takes kids music lessons? How can I further develop my child’s musical abilities? These are just some of the questions that I often receive, and which I am addressing in this article. In reality, each one of us, male or female, old or young, differs in the way we learn music. Some take up one kind of musical instrument only to eventually settle for another kind. Each musician will likely have a story to tell regarding their own history or exposure to music.

There are, however, many ways that we can direct a child’s interest to help their musical talent manifest itself and grow more naturally from an early age. The first thing you want to do is familiarize a child with music, and you can start by singing that cradle song to them. It’s amazing how calming music can be for babies. They usually love to hear you speak, and enjoy listening to chimes or repetitive songs. Sing to them regularly before going to bed, before nap time, or during any stressful situation.

To more firmly develop their interest in music, you should really get your children to learn a musical instrument. Choose educational toys for them that play happy or soothing music. When kids enjoy doing something, they do not mind repeating it again and again, hour after hour, day after day. So when they fall in love with a song, expect to hear it over and over again. Young children seem to be very attracted to classical music. They are drawn to the woodwinds and strings.

Sing along with them, even if singing is not really your talent. Kids don’t normally care if you sing off key or not. Great songs to start with are songs like, Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, Wheels on the Bus. Any song for children or even folk songs will do. This will create the interest in music for your child.

Ok so let’s say your child is growing up with music toys and songs, but what age do you start a formal kids music education for him? This can be determined by the depth of his interest in music. Children who are more of an introvert actually are good with picking up languages and have more appreciation of music.

While children that are sports oriented are least likely to understand the intricacies of music. A good time to start kids music classes is usually when the child is about 5 or 6 and understands the basics of reading. When he or she can understand that a music symbol is slightly different this is a good time to start classes. This doesn’t necessarily mean that children cannot begin taking up musical education later on in their life or that they won’t excel if they do this. This is one of those things that differ on a case to case basis.

When you start your child in music education, you need to give him your wholehearted support. You can accomplish this by taking an active part in your child’s learning experience. Accompany him to his classes. Praise him when he learns a new chord or new melody. Watch him perform during recitals. Overall, you need to be your child’s best fan. This should motivate him to continue developing his musical talents and abilities.
