Discover Death Rock with Misfits

March 9th, 2011

They say rock bands change members as frequently as vain people change clothes. This seems to be specifically true for the Misfits. Despite being firmly established in the music industry, the group has seen considerable member changes as reflected in their Misfits discography.

Band History

The Misfits has been around for quite some time. The original members came together in 1977 in New Jersey. At that time, Glenn Danzig took on the role of singer and songwriter. Band members included Manny Martinez on drums, Jimmy Battle on guitar and Diane DiPiazza on bass guitar. The next six years saw an extremely dynamic line up with band members coming and going. Glenn Danzig and Jerry Only were the only two members who consistently stayed on. The official band member count has been pegged at seventeen. Eight of these are drummers.

In 1983, the band decided to call it quits but eventually came together again in 1995. This only happened however after a prolonged battle on the legal arena for rights to use the band’s name. It’s obvious why this had to happen considering how established the Misfits name is in the music scene. Anyone given the right to carry the band name automatically inherits the band’s history and appeal to music fans across the globe.

To date, the group lineup is a mix of old and new. Jerry Only also known as Gerald Caifa is still on board as lead vocals and guitarist. He is joined by Des Cadena on backup vocals and guitar and Roberto Valverde also known as Robo on drums. Given their rocky past, many fans hope the group eventually settles on a more stable lineup.

Albums Out

Not a lot of bands can be called pioneers in their respective genres. The Misfits however do carry this rare distinction. They are particularly credited for putting the horror or death punk genre on a roll. This is a fusion of punk rock and generous doses of death imagery.

For the most part, the band can reasonably be said to have been quite prolific. In three decades, they were able to come up with four extended plays, twelve singles, five music videos, six studio albums, two live albums, one box set and one DVD. Avid fans also count one cancelled Misfits album as part of the groups work.

The following are the studio albums released in the market to date by the group:

• Walk Among Us- This was actually the third Misfits album to be recorded (Static Age and 12 Hits from Hell were the firsts) but was the first one released in March 1982
• Earth A.D./Wolfs Blood- This was the last album Glenn Danzig recorded with the band and was released in December 1983
• American Psycho- Released in 1997, it was named after the famous novel by Bret Easton Ellis
• Static Age- This was first recorded in 1978 but was only released in its entirety in 1997
• Famous Monster- Long before Lady Gaga’s album, there was the 1999 album by the Misfits
• Project 1950- As befits the name, it is a cover of old songs from the 50s to the 60s

The Misfits don’t have to work hard to stay popular. They are every bit as popular now as they were before and fans continue to eagerly wait for band and music merch developments.
